    Number of Bolts: 14

PML designed this transmission pan for 1981 to early 1990s Ford trucks and SUVs with the AOD automatic overdrive 4 speed transmissions.

    Benefits:

    • Extra capacity
    • Fins for heat dissipation
    • Heavy duty sand cast aluminum construction
    • Thick gasket flange machined flat for a secure seal
    • Drain hole and magnetic drain plug included

The bolt hole pattern for an AOD pan is almost the same as the bolt hole pattern for an AODE, 4R70 pan. There is one bolt hole different. On an AOD pan, the hole is closer to the corner on the driver side front than on an AODE, 4R70 pan. For comparison, the pan in the pictures below has been machined with holes for both AOD and AODE, 4R70.

aod and aode bolt hole patterns Pan with bolt holes for both AOD and AODE, 4R70   driver front corner of transmission pan close up of driver side front corner where bolt pattern is different  Click on image to view larger.

Also, there are differences in filters and transmission internals between AOD and AODE, 4R70 (4R70W , 4R70E), and 4R75 (4R75W, 4R75E) transmissions.

There are many configurations so please check your vehicle to verify transmission and clearance.

Trucks and SUVs, such as F150, Expedition, and Mountaineer, and some cars have clearance and can benefit from the extra fluid of a deep pan. Examples of vehicles that may be able to use this pan:

    • 1980 to 1993 Ford trucks
    • 1982 to 1993 Ford Bronco (check front driveline clearance)
    • 1981 to 1992 Lincoln Town Cars and limos based on it

Cars, such as Mustang and Thunderbird and Lincoln Mark VII, may need the PML stock capacity pan, part number 9324-1 because many cars do enough ground clearance for a deep pan. Lincoln Town Cars and limos based on the Town Car have installed this pan. Work vehicles like limousines appreciate the easier maintenance and extra capacity for cooling to extend the transmission life.

Installation Note: On some vehicles, the transmission cross member and mount must be temporarily removed so that you can drop the stock pan and install the PML pan. After installing the PML pan, be sure to reassemble. Thanks to Rick who provided this tip after installing this pan on his 2002 F–150 with the 4R70W transmission.

Shift Lever Note: A customer with a 1967 Ford F-250 TCI AODE transmission noticed that thickness of the PML pan did not allow the shift lever full range of motion. He took the lip back about a 1/4 inch across a 1.5 inch line to get full range of the shift lever.

Around 1992, Ford updated the AOD transmission with electronic controls, creating the AODE transmission then the 4R70 and so on.

Between AOD and AODE, 4R70 (4R70W , 4R70E), 4R75 (4R75W, 4R75E) transmissions, there are differences in the bolt hole pattern, filters and transmission internals so the transmission pans are not interchangeable.

PML makes stock capacity and extra capacity pans for all. Complete list with PML part numbers:

    Gasket

PML recommends a cork or cork composite gasket with our transmission pans. A fiber gasket can also work well. Here are some examples for reference. Customers have reported that these work well with a PML pan to provide a secure, leak-free seal. These are not sold by PML. Many other brands will also work well. These are just suggestions from other customers.

    Filter

For this pan, use a 4WD/deep AOD filter. Deep filters have metal pick-up tube that is about 1 inch long.

Some customers have reported that a Fram FT-1086 filter kit works well with this PML. The filter comes with a cork gasket, which should work well with the PML pan. The gasket is usually crunched up inside the box and may break or be difficult to flatten before installation. This is not sold by PML. Many other brands will also work well. This is just a suggestion from a customer.

The three round posts in the bottom of the pan are supports for the filter. These are cast into the pan. PML designed this pan with the filter supports to hold the the 4WD filter in place. The filter is called a 4WD filter even though it is used on 2WD vehicles.

Drain Location and Optional Temperature Sending Unit Machining

The drain is on the passenger side, near the bottom. The area around the drain hole is machined flat for good sealing.

Optionally, this pan can be machined for a temperature sending unit. There is a boss on the passenger/right side of the pan for this. It is the thick area a few inches away from the drain hole.

If you would like PML to drill and tap hole, there is a machining charge. Select option before clicking the ADD TO CART button when ordering on line. A plug for the hole is included.

The standard size is 1/8 NPT. Call or email if you need a different size.
