PML makes two covers for the GM 8.2 inch ring gear differential. This cover has straight horizontal fins and is only 5/8 inch deeper than stock for clearance. For a different look, see PML GM 8.2 Vertical Fins differential cover.

    Benefits:

    • Extra capacity
    • Drain hole and magnetic drain plug to simplify maintenance
    • Fins for heat dissipation
    • Sand cast aluminum construction for thick walls
    • Machined gasket flange for a secure seal
    • Works on vehicles with clearance limited by spare tires, sway bars and similar (always check space available)

This PML cover fits the GM 8.2 inch rear differential. Some Chevrolet and Pontiac 1960s and 1970s muscle cars have this differential.

    • Chevelle
    • Impala
    • Monte Carlo
    • Nova
    • Oldsmobile Cutlass
    • Pontiac GTO

Configurations vary. Always check your vehicle to verify differential and clearance.

Some 1960s and 1970s cars used a 12 bolt GM 8.875 inch ring gear instead of the 8.2 so be sure to check your configuration.

GM began using the 8.5 instead of the 8.2 around 1973.

Since the size, shape and bolt hole pattern of the 8.2 and 8.5/8.625 are nearly identical, a gasket is the best way to check if a differential has the 8.2 inch ring gear or the 8.5/8.6 inch ring gear if you are unsure.

A customer provided Felpro gasket part number 55028 for reference for his 1966 Chevelle with the 8.2.

For example, a GM 8.5/8.625 gasket for a 1998 Silverado 1500 would not have quite the same bolt hole pattern when placed on an 8.2 differential.

Examples of vehicles that have installed a PML GM 8.2 differential cover:

    • 1966 Impala
    • 1960s Chevelles
    • 1966 Pontiac GTO
    • 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass
    • 1970 Nova

    No images of installations available.

    Optional Temperature Sensor Port

The boss on the side can optionally be machined for temperature sending unit. There is a machining charge and a plug is included.

    Gasket Information

A customer provided Felpro gasket part number 55028 for reference for his 1966 Chevelle with the 8.2.

PML recommends RTV or paper/fiber gaskets or cork composite gaskets.

PML machines the gasket surface of our differential covers flat. The flange surface of the differential housing is also machined flat. A thin bead of RTV silicon sealant makes an excellent seal between two machined surfaces.

The bolt hole pattern for the GM 8.5/8.625 is very similar. But a gasket for the 8.5/8.625 would not line up on an 8.2 differential. For example, a GM 8.5/8.625 gasket for a 1998 Silverado 1500 would not have quite the same bolt hole pattern when placed on an 8.2 differential.

    Level Check

Use the level check on the differential. the level check hole on the PML covers may not be at the same relative location. The fill/level check holes on the PML cover correspond to the GM 8.5/8.625 differential.
